The Miles Behind Our Mission

Our Story

The Miles to Go Foundation was born from our family’s own journey.

When our son, Nicholas, was just five months old, he was diagnosed with right-sided hemiplegia. Hemiplegia is a neurological condition that affects movement and muscle control on one side of the body as a result of a stroke either before or shortly after birth.

For children like Nicholas, it can affect everything from walking and balance to using the hand and arm on the affected side. Every child experiences hemiplegia differently, and every child’s journey is unique.

For our family, Nicholas’s diagnosis marked the beginning of a journey we never expected to take. Since that day, we have spent countless hours seeking out therapies, learning about hemiplegia, advocating for Nicholas, and, perhaps most importantly, looking for a community of people who understand what our family is experiencing.

We quickly learned that therapy can make an incredible difference. Physical and occupational therapies can help children build strength, coordination, balance, mobility, and independence, while giving them opportunities to develop skills in ways that are meaningful to their everyday lives.

But we also learned that finding the right resources isn't always easy—and access to the therapies and programs children need can come with significant financial and logistical challenges.

Finding a Community

Through Nicholas's physiatrist, we were introduced to Intensive Therapeutics and its summer programs for children with hemiplegia.

We didn't know exactly what to expect when Nicholas attended his first camp. What we found was so much more than a therapy program.

We found a group of dedicated professionals who genuinely care about these children. We found families who understand the challenges, the victories, the setbacks, and the everyday moments that come with raising a child with hemiplegia. Most importantly, Nicholas loved his first camp.

For the first time, we saw him surrounded by other children who shared experiences similar to his own. We saw a community where differences were understood, celebrated, and never allowed to define what a child could accomplish. That experience helped shape what Miles to Go Foundation is today.

Why Miles to Go?

We created the Miles to Go Foundation because we want to help make these opportunities available to more children. Our goal is to raise funds to help children with hemiplegia access the therapy services, programs, resources, and support they need to keep moving forward.

We also want to support the work of organizations like Intensive Therapeutics that are creating meaningful opportunities for children and families affected by hemiplegia.

We know firsthand how important it is to have people in your corner—to have access to therapy, to find a community, and to know that your child is surrounded by people who believe in what they can accomplish.

Nicholas's journey is just beginning. And while we don't know exactly where it will take him, we know one thing: We're going to keep moving forward, and we want to help other children and families do the same.

Our Mission

Miles to Go Foundation is dedicated to helping children with hemiplegia reach their full potential by providing access to therapies, resources, and support that empower them to move forward with confidence and independence.

Because every child deserves the opportunity to keep moving forward.
